NE State unveils the Bear Den – a one-stop student service center

Northeast State unveiled its Bear Den today, a new information hub designed to help students get answers on registration and financial aid in a single location.

The new student-friendly space opened for the spring semester at the College’s Blountville campus in room C2107 of the General Studies Building. As designed, the Den solves problems on the business side of college life so students can focus on their academic work.

The concept sprang to life from the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan titled Northeast State Bear Strong: A Culture of Service Excellence. Surveys showed students wanted a way to get answers and gather information without having to visit several offices.

“We thought it was important that we cross-train staff members so that students could walk into a one-stop location and get answers for financial aid, advising, and career services,” said Bethany Bullock, Northeast State president. “We have highly trained professionals anchored in Bear Den to give students the advice, support, and help they need.”

Rayma Gibbs, a student-needs specialist, and Ashley Strickland, an admissions specialist, currently staff the Bear den.

Gibbs said the Bear Den also boasts interactive artificial intelligence software that enables students to chat with staff during office hours and by appointment as needed.

“The AI technology aspect of the Bear Den allows us to communicate with students through any smartphone or device,” said Gibbs. “That capability is a must to keep students informed, especially with social distancing and COVID.”

A U.S. Department of Education Title III grant funded the Den’s creation and space renovation.

“It’s great to have the services all together,” said Kristi Peters, an Environmental Science major. “It’s much easier for students and makes them feel more welcome.”

The Blountville Bear Den is the first of several student success centers that the College will phase in over the next few years. Dens are planned for the Johnson City, Kingsport, and Elizabethton campuses.
