Northeast State vice president earns PTK national award

Dr. Susan Graybeal

A Northeast State vice president is among 22 college administrators nationwide selected as a distinguished college administrator by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society (PTK).

Dr. Susan Graybeal, vice president for Institutional Excellence and Student Success, will be recognized with a Distinguished College Administrator award during PTK Catalyst 2024, the Society’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla., April 4th through April 6th.

Northeast State’s Alpha Iota Chi chapter of PTK consistently ranks among the best chapters in the Tennessee Region for scholarship and academic achievement. The chapter’s officers nominated Graybeal for her support of their pursuits of excellence.

“The Chapter’s dedication to academic excellence and commitment to supporting the region’s development is truly inspiring; I am honored to support their efforts,” said Graybeal. “Working with such driven student leaders and scholars is truly a privilege, and I am constantly amazed by their innovation, hard work, and dedication as they seek to make our region a better place to learn and work.”

The award recognizes college administrators working directly with student leaders to solve problems on campus and in their communities. They have taken an active interest in supporting high-achieving students and developing student leaders. Honorees were selected from among thousands of college administrators eligible to receive the award.

“These college administrators are beloved on campus – they know students by name and by circumstance,” said Phi Theta Kappa President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “This award is special because it comes directly from the students, and it is evidence of the gratitude they feel for the support for them, and students like them.”

A Northeast State alumna, Dr. Graybeal began her career at the College in 1991. She gained an affinity for the needs of students and the region as the director of the Northeast State at Elizabethton campus.  This affinity led her to co-sponsor a proclamation request to the State of Tennessee to make May “Adult Learner Month” in perpetuity, which has been celebrated for over 20 years.  She also has been instrumental in expanding the College’s student outreach and engagement efforts. Over her tenure, Dr. Graybeal has been recognized as the College’s Outstanding Graduate, Administrator, and Alumnus of the Year.

Alpha Iota Chi chapter officers have earned numerous individual and team awards for leadership and academic research projects presented at PTK conferences. The chapter holds society distinctions including recognition as a PTK Five Star chapter and a Chapter of Light.
