Northeast State offers Mental Health First Aid course in October

Northeast State’s Workforce Solutions offers a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course scheduled October 14, 21, and 28 at the Blountville campus.

Northeast State’s Workforce Solutions offers a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course scheduled in the evenings to help individuals provide initial help to people experiencing a crisis. The course will hold three meetings in October at the Technical Education Complex on Northeast State’s Blountville campus.

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based, early-intervention course that teaches participants about mental health and substance use challenges. The training gives individuals the skills they need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Course meeting dates: October 14, October 21, and October 28

Class hours for each meeting: 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Location: Northeast State at Blountville, 2425 Highway 75, Technical Education Complex, Room TE027

Course fee: $80

Similarly to First Aid and CPR courses, MHFA helps participants learn how to assist someone experiencing a crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved. Unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges can be difficult to see or understand.

Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan to recognize warning signs of a mental health or substance use challenge, provide help in crisis and non-crisis situations, and understand where to turn for additional assistance. The 5-step action plan called ALGEE is: Assess risk of suicide or harm; Listen nonjudgmentally; Give reassurance and information; Encourage appropriate professional help; and Encourage self-help and other support strategies.

Registration and fees must be completed and paid prior to attending the course.
