Northeast State welcomes SkillsUSA to Blountville campus Sept. 13

Learn the process to sharpen your career readiness skills when representatives of SkillsUSA Tennessee visits Northeast State Community College’s Blountville campus on Sept. 13. SkillsUSA representatives will be available from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Courtyard. All Northeast State students are welcome and encouraged to attend.

“SkillsUSA widens options for CTE students no matter what their field of study and showcases student skills and success in a unique way that gets them excited about higher education,” said Northeast State President James D. King. “I’ve been involved with SkillsUSA on many of our Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology campuses since 2007.”

As an innovator in postsecondary education for career and technical education (CTE) students, SkillsUSA kicks off a campaign at Northeast State to introduce the program to 13 community colleges this fall. This campaign adds these community colleges to 27 technical college chapters, bringing the SkillsUSA program to a total of 40 public college campuses statewide.

SkillsUSA is a nonprofit partnership of students, instructors and industry created to ensure America maintains a skilled workforce.

SkillsUSA launched this campaign to engage with community college students, staff, and faculty about this innovative program. Northeast State proudly hosts the SkillsUSA high school competitions held at the Blountville campus during the spring semester.

“We’re pleased to be able to expand these programs to the community colleges and allow more students the opportunity to enter the workforce fully prepared.  However, student success in SkillsUSA can be directly attributed to the level of involvement and enthusiasm demonstrated by their instructors and advisors,” said President King. “Therefore, I encourage all Northeast State instructors and advisors to become involved with SkillsUSA so that we can become more effective mentors to our students.”

Attendees at the campus kickoffs will learn more about the SkillsUSA program of work. State and national officers will work with students on each campus to jump-start involvement. Meanwhile, SkillsUSA staff will train each campus’ career and technical education instructors. Tennessee college/postsecondary students will then begin to enhance their studies with SkillsUSA’s career-readiness focus and structured program of work, integrated into the learning process. The program includes classroom-based activity, community activity and a structured competition program at the local, state and national levels.

This multi-campus rollout trains instructors in the use of the SkillsUSA Framework. The framework components include personal skills, workplace skills and technical skills grounded in academics. Working in teams, understanding leadership and communicating clearly are required in any career. The framework showcases these skills, connects students to employers and provides a way for students to articulate what they are learning.

“SkillsUSA Tennessee has always been an innovative association, and we are pleased to see James King and Chelle Travis take the lead on rolling out our program to more students,” said Timothy Lawrence, SkillsUSA executive director. “Our programs help students to be job ready Day One, and our mission to improve the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce has never been more important.”
