The Northeast State Community College Debate Team competed April 6 in the East Tennessee State University Parli Plunder Tournament at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education.
NeSCC had two teams competing. One team consisted of Emily Napier and Sydney Gounaris and the other paired Levi Smith and Spencer Russell.
Napier and Gounaris earned the third place team award and Smith and Russell earned the fourth place team award. Napier was named the fourth place speaker and Smith was the fifth place speaker.

The teams competed in the novice division. There were 12 teams and 23 competitors in the novice division. There were teams from East Tennessee State University, Pellissippi State Community College, and Walters State Community College.
All teams competed in three preliminary rounds. In these three rounds, NeSCC debaters faced teams from Walters State and ETSU. In these rounds, both teams went 2 and 1. Topics included binge-watching Netflix, nature vs. nurture, cutting ties with Saudi Arabia, and more.
Due to their speaker points and speaker rankings, both teams earned a place in the semi-final round; however, neither team was able to advance.
