Northeast State celebrates year’s best at Honors Convocation

Northeast State recognized the year’s distinguished students, staff, and faculty members at the annual Honors Convocation held Thursday night at the MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center in Kingsport. A gallery of photos from the event can be accessed via this link.

Monica Tucker earned the Outstanding Student Award for 2018-19. Tucker graduated in December earning two associate of science degrees in the subjects of Social Work and Sociology.  She received the Social Work department’s award as the program’s top student for the 2017-18 academic year. Tucker won the college’s Adult Learner of the Year in 2018. She also received the Armen Mustaklem Combs Memorial Annual Scholarship and the Sarah Linda Leonard Annual Scholarship. Both scholarships are awarded to adult students achieving academic and leadership standards.

Tucker holds membership in the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and Alpha Sigma Lambda honor societies for community college students. Tucker was one of three Northeast State students named to the PTK All-Tennessee Community College Academic Team for 2018.

The College also honored the President’s All-Academic Team of 2018-19 at a ceremony held shortly before the Convocation. The All-Academic Team recognized the students graduating this spring with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

The 2019 graduating class features 199 students graduating cum laude with grade point averages (GPAs) of 3.49 to 3.74, 98 students graduating magna cum laude with GPAs of 3.75 to 3.89, and 115 students graduating summa cum laude with GPAs of 3.90 to 4.0. The Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award was presented to Alex Hall. A member of the College’s first graduating class and longtime faculty member, Hall retired from Northeast State as an associate professor of Drafting Design Technology.

Thrilled to see Alex Hall (pictured with family) take home the Outstanding Alumni Award.

Distinguished Staff Awards were presented to Northeast State faculty and staff who were nominated by their colleagues for their outstanding service to students and the College.

John Adcox of the Northeast State Office of Veterans Affairs received the Distinguished Support Staff Member award. A U.S. Army veteran, Adcox often leads the College’s Veterans Academic Success Orientations, assisting the transition from veteran to student at Northeast State. He developed a workshop for student veterans who will be transferring from Northeast State to a university. He also completed his fourth year as advisor to the college’s Student Veterans of American chapter.

Speech Professor Dr. Rick Merritt was honored with the 1st Place Distinguished Faculty Member Award. Merritt has worked with students on the Northeast State Debate Team to prepare for competitions, and the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature. He also serves as an advisor for the College’s Toastmasters Club–A Toast to Education.

The Northeast State spring commencement ceremony will be held May 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the East Tennessee State University Memorial Center in Johnson City.
