RCAM celebrates our apprenticeship signees, graduates

Northeast State and the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) welcomed three new apprentices and toasted two apprentice program graduates at the Apprenticeship Signing Day & Graduation event on Friday morning.

Heath McMillian, executive director for Economic and Workforce Development at Northeast State, welcomed the apprentices and their sponsoring companies to RCAM. The event marks the newest chapter for the college’s fast-growing apprenticeship program.

“This is an amazing opportunity, and we are thrilled to have you here,” McMillian told apprentices and their companies’ representatives.

New apprentices Joseph Oliver, Nathanael Stonecipher, and Paul Townsend inked their apprenticeship agreements. Oliver continues his apprenticeship through his employer Seaman Company located in Bristol Tennessee. Stonecipher and Townsend represent the Snap-On Tools facility in Elizabethton.

“It gives you the hands-on training as far as applying yourself to the work, gets you used to the work flow and what to expect, plus it gives you skill training,” said Stonecipher. “As apprentices, we will work with journeymen who have more than 15 years of experience with the company.”

Oliver graduated from Northeast State in 2019 with an associate degree in electromechanical technology. A Seaman employee for 13 years, he praised Northeast State for providing him with an opportunity for career growth.

“From the time I started there everyone was helpful,” Oliver said. “The slogan is ‘We’re here to get you there,’ and they did.”

A longtime welder and millwright, Townsend said he doggedly pursued an opportunity with Snap-On. When he learned about the apprenticeship program through Northeast State he jumped at the opportunity.

“That light bulb came on and I knew this could be my education, and I was going to get paid while I was doing it,” said Townsend. “I think this will skyrocket my career and it will open all the doors I couldn’t go through because I didn’t have a credential.”

Apprenticeship program graduates Tim Cassidy and Nathan Hodge received their framed certificates of completion from McMillian. Both men earned the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Certificate of Apprenticeship Completion.

The signing and graduation ceremony marks another step forward for RCAM and local companies participating in apprenticeship programs. Through RCAM, Northeast State sponsored their first apprenticeship program in the spring of 2017. Programs are established as “Group Apprenticeship Programs” enabling companies of all sizes to take advantage of apprenticeship training, without the burden of managing a company-sponsored program.

RCAM is a registered apprenticeship sponsor, meaning it can put together a training package – per DOL guidelines – for companies of any size. This training is especially valuable for smaller companies and entrepreneurs that might not otherwise be able to offer or sustain an apprenticeship program. At the end of the program, the workers receive a DOL certificate of completion.

Each employee completing a sponsored apprenticeship received a DOL certificate of completion. From careers in healthcare, energy and IT, to manufacturing, transportation and more, Northeast State and RCAM foresee the registered apprenticeship sponsorship as a critical tool for innovative new companies to compete in the global marketplace.

“Northeast State is committed to helping you become successful,” McMillian said. “Welcome to the Northeast State family.”
