Northeast State welcomes Rev. Vincent Dial, former band director with the Johnson City Schools, to present “Drum Talk” on Feb. 25 at the Blountville campus. The event begins at 11:00 a.m. in the upper Courtyard area outside Subway and continues until 1:00 p.m.
The presentation will focus on the role and power of the drum in communication and music. Rev. Dial’s appearance continues Northeast State’s celebration of Black History Month. He is a frequent performer at the Johnson City Umoja Festival, an event he helped establish in 1997.

Following his graduation from Carson-Newman University, Rev. Dial played professional football for the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. After his retirement from pro football he worked to establish the band program at Liberty Bell Middle School and later at Indian Trail Middle School for Johnson City Schools. As an educator he taught scores of students to overcome their fears, face challenges, and succeed.
After establishing the band programs at the city’s middle schools, Rev. Dial became assistant principal at Science Hill High School. He later became principal at North Side Elementary School.
Students are encouraged to bring drums and/or other instruments (spoons and buckets welcomed) to participate in creating a sound of celebration at Northeast State.
