Northeast State has received a grant to assist students engaged in technical trade and construction-based fields of study.
The Southeastern Construction Owners and Associates Roundtable (SCOAR) named the College as a recipient of the Craft Trades Grant and Scholarship earlier this month. The grant includes $4,500 earmarked to fund teaching tools and materials for Northeast State’s SkillsUSA program. An additional scholarship award of $1,000 is included for a student selected through an application process.
“We feel truly honored to be chosen for this outstanding opportunity to support our SkillsUSA program here at Northeast State,” said Cindy Necessary, coordinator of Industry Training and Credentialing at Northeast State. “We are also very pleased with the opportunity to award a scholarship to a student through this grant.”
SCOAR, NCCER, and SkillsUSA collaborate to help America maintain a skilled workforce.
The Craft Trades Grant and Scholarship Program operates as a public/private partnership between the construction industry, the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), SCOAR and SkillsUSA. NCCER and SCOAR awards one selected school per state annually to receive the grant for education and training purposes.
The scholarship award goes to one student excelling in a SkillsUSA program. The student scholarship recipient will be chosen via a competitive application and selection process. Schools may also receive donations from employers in the way of tools and materials used in the craft training in place at the school.
The Craft and Trade grant program strives to recruit, educate and guide students to educational and employment opportunities in the construction industry. The program funds academic programs dedicated to helping students gain the knowledge, skills and industry credentials necessary to enter the construction industry.
The Northeast State Technologies Division offers associate degrees and technical certificates in a variety of Industrial Technology-driven disciplines. The College’s Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing provides 21st-century, advanced manufacturing training for traditional and non-traditional students.
SkillsUSA® is a national membership association serving students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations (including health occupations) and for further education. The College’s SkillsUSA chapter unites students, faculty, and industries to enhance advanced technology occupations. The chapter has competed in state and national competitions in recent years.
Representatives from SCOAR plan to visit Northeast State later this year. Institutions applying for the Crafts and Trade Grant commit to supporting their existing SkillsUSA chapter, using the NCCER curriculum and assessments for testing, and recruit interested students committed to developing their skills for the construction industry.
