Northeast State announced a welcomed grant from the Gene Haas Foundation to educate a new generation of skilled technical workers.
The Foundation awarded a grant totaling $17,500 to Northeast State to assist dual enrollment students pursuing CNC/machining-based training or engineering programs. The College’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) dual enrollment pathway gives high school students the opportunity to earn college credit in the career field of their choice. The grant provides a tremendous help to dual enrollment students preparing to attend classes at the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) Academy on the Kingsport campus.
“We extend our deepest thanks to the Haas Foundation for their giving spirit and commitment to developing students,” said Cindy Necessary, Industry Training & Credentialing coordinator at RCAM. “We are delighted to help our dual enrollment students move forward in their careers.”
The grant funds scholarships to students currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a CNC Technology or CNC Machining program at Northeast State. These Gene Haas Scholarships fund tuition, books, a student’s personal National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) account, and the cost of individual NIMS credentials.
The new grant marks the third and largest award made by the Haas Foundation to Northeast State. The two previous grants also funded scholarships for dual enrollment students pursuing CNC/machining-based training. Northeast State President Dr. Bethany Bullock thanked the Haas Foundation and Necessary for her work in making the partnership successful.
“The Haas Foundation continues to elevate their generosity to the college,” said Dr. Bullock. “We are really excited about the opportunities this creates for our students.”
The grant also makes available up to $2,500 of funds for use to support the college’s SkillsUSA chapter to participate in CNC/Manufacturing competitions. SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations (including health occupations) and for further education. The Northeast State SkillsUSA chapter has won regional awards and competed in the national SkillsUSA competition.
RCAM and the RCAM Academy represent Northeast State’s dedication to educating a skilled regional workforce. The RCAM Academy provides technical training capabilities and dual enrollment opportunities for high school students around the region. The Academy features a Machine Tool/CNC laboratory with teaching technology critical for cutting edge instruction.
In addition to dual enrollment program, RCAM offers a Machinist Apprenticeship Program. The Machinist apprenticeship pathway unites seasoned faculty and participating manufacturing partners to provide on-the-job training for new apprentices. Senior journeymen instructors train apprentices over a four-year period in trade-specific skills under the guidelines of the United States Department of Labor (DOL). Northeast State and RCAM established the Group Registered Apprenticeship Program to strengthen the region’s workforce into the 21st century.
Northeast State offers a 63-credit-hour associate’s degree in Machine Tool technology and a 31-credit-hour certificate in Machine Tool Operations. The Machine Tool program teach students how to operate manufacturing equipment to include machine lathes, mills, grinders, and CAD/CAM software. Machinists and CNC operators use print specifications designed in CAD software to create machine parts for a near endless variety of manufacturing applications.
Founded by Gene Haas in 1999, the Gene Haas Foundation seeks to build skills in the machining industry by providing scholarships for CNC machine technology students and NIMS credentials. The Foundation has awarded more than $75 million to more than 8,000 charitable organizations and schools since 1999.
