The Northeast State Department of Theatre will perform The Haunting of Hill House on Oct. 28, 29, and 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 31 at 2:00 p.m. Play performances happen on-ground in the Regional Center for Performing Arts Theatre on the College’s Blountville campus.
Based on the 1959 gothic horror novel by Shirley Jackson, this stage adaptation is a chilling and mystifying study in mounting terror. Isolated and foreboding Hill House stands empty and silent with a dark history keeping that keeps the curious away. The only visits made are by the house’s grumbling caretaker, Mrs. Dudley.
The isolation is broken by the arrival of Dr. Montague, an investigator of supernatural phenomena who received a short lease to stay in Hill House by the present owner. His delves into the morbid history of the house to come to grips with the occult forces that have made it uninhabitable for years. Other guests and paranormal researchers arrive. Their visit begins with jovial informality, but their sensibilities get jolted by strange and eerie occurrences.
Joining the group are Dr. Montague’s wife and a friend, who have come to Hill House for purposes of their own. They, too, are absorbed by the supernatural but choose a dangerous method of direct communication with the departed spirits. This fateful decision starts a chain reaction of events as the evil forces of Hill House awaken. Questioning themselves, and with fears mounting, the visitors seek the truth about the evil presence in Hill House – unaware that it may have plans of its own.
The Haunting of Hill House is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. The novel was adapted for the stage by F. Andrew Leslie. The play is being directed by Northeast State’s Brad McKenzie.
