Adjunct Spotlight – Becky Taylor, Behavioral & Social Sciences

My name is Becky Taylor, and I’ve worked as an adjunct faculty member at Northeast State since 2003. I am a graduate of Milligan College with my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Early Childhood Education.

Becky Taylor

I was the seventh member and fourth generation of the Taylor family to attend Milligan, and having also had the privilege to teach there several times.  I began teaching early childhood education courses in 2001. I have taught many different courses: Safe Healthy Learning Environments, Family Dynamics, Mentoring, Initial and Final Practicum, Math and Science in Early Childhood, and Language and Literacy in Early Childhood. In 2003, these courses were incorporated into the AAS program at Northeast State.

My background has been teaching five years in a childcare center, three years as lead teacher in Head Start, 18 years as a director of a childcare center, and then seven years as an early interventionist. Currently, I am a Service Coordinator with Tennessee Early Intervention System, serve as a weekend manager at the Ronald McDonald House once a month, and volunteer at the Isaiah 117 House.

My philosophy of early childhood education is simple: Children learn through play!  “Children’s play is their work” (Maria Montessori).  Young children learn in their own way by hands on exploration of their environment. My goal is to help children learn to think, not what to think. I want to instill in them the desire to learn naturally. As an instructor, my goal is to convey this idea to my students, guiding them in becoming open-minded thinkers themselves.

Over my years as an adjunct faculty member at Northeast State, I honestly feel that my greatest accomplishment has been passing on my knowledge and experiences to the next generation. I have had the honor of mentoring many students, assisting them in beginning their careers as early childhood professionals, and following them along their journeys.  I am also very proud of the quality students that have emerged from our Early Childhood Program at Northeast State.
