Northeast State welcomed spring 2022 class of members to the Alpha Iota Chi chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. The new members were inducted into the honor society for community college students at a ceremony held April 24 in the Regional Center for Performing Arts Theatre on the Blountville campus.
The ceremony was led by Dr. Jane Honeycutt, the chapter’s faculty advisor and assistant vice president for Teaching Excellence and Academic Services at Northeast State. Northeast State interim President Dr. Connie Marshall served as guest speaker at the ceremony. Marshall cited the PTK members who continued forward to become surgeons, CEOs, and entrepreneurs.
“PTK members are parents, veterans, and first-generation college students,” Marshall told the new inductees. “You can confidently say you are part of a society that is making a difference across the globe.”

Chapter President Bryan Kirk emceed the ceremony and welcomed new members into the chapter. With an impressive history of winning individual and team awards at PTK regional and international competitions, Alpha Iota Chi received awards this spring at the Tennessee Region and PTK Catalyst 2022 events. The 2021-22 chapter office team included Kirk; Claudia De La Torre, vice president of service; MacKenly Jones, vice president of Communication; and Nichole Taylor, secretary. The officer team voted to name Madison Simounet as Distinguished Chapter Member for the year. De La Torre and Taylor were voted as Distinguished Chapter officers of the year.
To qualify for membership to Phi Theta Kappa, a student must be enrolled full-time in an associate degree program, have completed at least 12 hours of college-level coursework, and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. A college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter extends membership invitations to all students meeting these criteria.
Alpha Iota Chi has achieved five-star status, the highest level of participation in Phi Theta Kappa activities. PTK ranks as the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,200 chapters. Society chapters exist in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada, and Germany.
Honeycutt thanked the 2021-22 office team and welcomed the new members. She challenged the newbies to continue the spirit of achievement found in the fellowship of Alpha Iota Chi.
