The Northeast State Nursing program celebrated the spring class of graduates at the Pinning Ceremony held May 6 at the Regional Center for the Performing Arts Theatre on the College’s Blountville campus.

The College’s Director of Nursing, Johanna Neubrander, along with members of the department’s faculty and staff recognized this newest class of more than 30 students receiving their pins. Northeast State Interim President Dr. Connie Marshall congratulated the nursing students for their dedication to a challenging profession.

“You have chosen to enter into a selfless career that puts the needs of others ahead of your own,” said Marshall. “I am confident each of you is up to the challenge.”

The spring class of Nursing  graduates are:  Diana Baker; Chloe Ball; Brittany Barnett; Jennifer Brown; Mary Carver; Malachi Cumbow; Cassie Deloach; Alexia Epps; Erica Fields; Dakota Fletcher; Lucas Free; Briana Gentry; Ami Gray; Afton Hensley; Jordan Hensley; Melissa Hooper; Amanda Horton; Taylor Kohler; Lindsey McMurray; Margaret Morrow; Jeremiah Powers; Hannah Salyer; Cynthia Seward; Alexia Singletary; Hailey Smith; Shannon Smith; Taylor Smith; Chelsea Sutherland; Michaela Sutherland; Erin Tuthill; Emily Ward; Cristina Williams; and Joshua Willis.

The pinning ceremony serves a symbolic welcoming of new nurses into the profession. Nursing faculty present several awards to students for their outstanding work through the degree program.  Nursing students take either the traditional nursing path or the licensed practical nurse (L.P.N.) to registered nursing (R.N.) pathway.

Dakota Fletcher received the program’s Outstanding Student Award for traditional nursing students.  Mary Carver received the Outstanding Student Award for L.P.N to R.N. path students.

Cassie Deloach won the Adult Learner of the Year Award for the traditional nursing track. Carver also received the Adult Learner of the Year Award for the L.P.N. to R.N. path.

The nursing “pin” traces it roots back 1,000 years to the Maltese Cross. The Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John the Baptist were the first to be pinned. Those pins recognized the knights as caregivers for sick and injured Crusaders.

Professor Joy McClain led the students in the Nightingale Pledge. Named to honor the iconic nurse Florence Nightingale, the pledge marks a traditional pledge made by nurses dedicating their lives to their profession.

The nursing students graduating this spring receive their associate of applied science degrees at the College’s spring commencement ceremony happening May 10 on the Blountville campus.

Northeast State Nursing alumna and now associate professor, Stacey Stokes, praised the new graduates as she recalled her own journey through the program.

“You all have done wonderfully,” said Stokes. “We are so proud of you.”
