Dennis T. Powell, a longtime supporter of Northeast State Community College and member of the College’s Foundation, died June 1; he was 94.
Powell served on the Foundation board from 1996 to 2014, and was named an Honorary Foundation Board Member in 2016.
He was a member of the President’s Trust and established the Dennis and Mary Powell Endowed Scholarship in 1999 for students majoring in Auto Body and Collison Repair.
Powell operated Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep dealerships in Johnson City and Kingsport. He served as president of the the Tennessee Automobile Dealers Association and was a member of the Chrysler Corporation Dealer Council.
He received the Tennessee Automotive Association’s highest award, the Andrew Jackson Award, becoming the 1998 Tennessee nominee for the Time Magazine Goodyear Quality Dealer of the year award. Less than 60 individuals out of the nation’s then 20,000-plus automobile dealers are nominated for this award.
He was lifetime member of Lion’s International, and served the boards of numerous organizations including the Johnson City Power Board, the Sequoyah Council for the Boy Scouts, the Johnson City Medical Center Foundation, and the East Tennessee State University Foundation.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 in the Sanctuary of Central Baptist Church, 300 North Roan Street, Johnson City. The family will receive friends in the Welcome Corridor preceding the service from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday, June 9, at 10 a.m. at Monte Vista Memorial Park, 1900 East Oakland Avenue, Johnson City.
