Learning languages raises your marketability and brain power. Workforce Solutions of Northeast State sponsors two online American Sign Language (ASL) courses Level I and Level II competency beginning in August. These eight-week courses are open to anyone interested in learning ASL.
The Level I ASL class meets via the Zoom virtual classroom on Wednesday evenings beginning August 17. Class time is 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., for each meeting. This class introduces students into the world of signing language as a communication tool. Students build their sign vocabulary as well as learn grammatical structure. Expressive and receptive skills in the language will also be developed. At the completion of the course, participants should be able to communicate with the deaf on a basic level.
The Level II meets online on Thursday evenings beginning October 13. Class time is 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., for each meeting. The course follows the beginner level class moving students toward learning intermediate sign language. The Level II course takes basic vocabulary and grammar and hones it into a solid base for language competency. At the completion of the course, students should be able to navigate more fluidly through facial expressions, non-manual markers, vocabulary, and content. Classes will NOT meet on Nov. 24, the week of Thanksgiving.
Classes will be conducted via the ZOOM virtual classroom. Upon registering, participating students will receive the access link. The registration deadline for both courses is August 10.
The fee is $80.00 per course session. To register for one or both courses, contact Dawn Ingraham at 423.354.5520 or dmingraham@NortheastState.edu.
