Northeast State’s annual Because of You Campaign fundraiser enjoyed another successful year, raising $33,220 to fund student programs through the Northeast State Foundation.
“I came on campus in the middle of the Because of You Campaign; it reminded me of the joy, value, and purpose of Northeast State Community College,” said Dr. Jeff McCord, who assumed the College’s top post on Sept. 30. “I’m grateful to celebrate the spirit that permeates this college.”
The campaign ran from Sept. 26 through Oct. 7, featuring various fundraising events organized by departments across the College.
The campaign raises money for student scholarships administered by the Northeast State Foundation. Staff and faculty organized more than 20 teams that competed to raise funds.
Team Bear Bucks topped this year’s campaign raising $9,956. Held inside Wayne G. Basler Library, the ever-popular Bear Bucks Marketplace featured a slew of holiday gifts, food, and themed décor.
The Multicultural Center team ranked second with $6,360 raised. The Music Department team posted $2,570 for a third-place finish. The department hosted the Northeast State’s Got Talent show contest.
The talent contest invited submissions from students and staff. Fans paid to cast their votes for the most talented performer. The first-place award went to The Rust Family for their cover of Amigo’s Guitar by Kitty Wells. Christopher Laing received second place for his Avicii Levels (Skrillex Remix) guitar cover. Zach McNabb took third place with a performance of Oh, Lonesome Me by Hank Williams.
The Human Resources Department sponsored the popular Cutest Pet Contest. Faculty, staff, and students posted $1 per vote to cast their ballots among pet dogs, cats, a hamster, and two chickens named Zsa Zsa and Lucy.
The first-place award went to Gidget, a dog belonging to Sandy Hiortdahl. The second-place award went to Dottie, a dog belonging to Sam Rowell. Third place was awarded to Bentley, a dog owned by Melissa Ramsey.
The Research, Analytics, and Planning office hosted a dance party with proceeds benefitting the Allana Hamilton Memorial Scholarship. The dance champ award went to Greg Walters, with Elisa Nanney and Beka Saulsbury landing group dance champ honors. The best dance spirit award was captured by Dr. Becky Thomas.
In the best door decorations contest, The Bear Den, won Most Creative; the Regional Center for Health Professions earned Best Theme; and the Career and Workforce Development Center won Best School Spirit.
The Northeast State Advancement Office coordinated the annual campaign.
“We are thankful to Northeast State employees for putting their efforts and earnings into making this a meaningful event,” said Megan Almaroad, director of Advancement Operations. “It truly impacts the lives and futures of our students.”
