Northeast State offers online American Sign Language course

The Office of Workforce Solutions at Northeast State sponsors a virtual class on American Sign Language (ASL) at Level I beginner’s competency beginning February 16.

The course meets via Zoom virtual classroom on Thursday evenings from Feb. 16 to April 6. Class time is 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., for each meeting.

The eight-week course content focuses not only learning basic to intermediate signs but learning to think in ASL terms allowing for proper usage. Learning correct context and ASL word order is essential to effective communication.  The class helps students build their sign vocabulary as well as learn grammatical structure. Expressive and receptive skills in the language will also be developed.  At the completion of the course, participants should be able to communicate with the deaf on a basic level.  The course is open to anyone interested in learning ASL.

The course instructor holds a National Interpreter Certification in American Sign Language. The class fee is $80.00.

Upon the completion of these courses, students will have a better understanding of Deaf history and culture as well as up to intermediate communication skills.
