The Esports Bears rolling in spring season gaming battles

The Northeast State Bears esports team competes against an opponent.

The tough competitors of the Northeast State Bears are rolling through the spring season with new teams and teammates. Check the season schedule to follow the Bears.

The League of Legends Bears started the spring season with five consecutive wins! The Bears defeated Crowder Community College (Neosho, Mo.) 2 games to zero in a best-of-three series on Jan. 29. The Legends triumphed over Monroe Community College (Rochester, N.Y.) by a 2-0 series count and defeated Spokane Community College (Spokane, Wash.) by forfeit. The Bears Legends’ team is Daniel Rameriz (Mira Mis Puntos); Jay Bronson (JayTheFallenOne); Nathan Columbe (GhostDogHowl); Landon Burton (ThePredator); and Jason Brown (MageGods). Alas, the winning streak ended March 4 when the Bears fell 2-0 to the fearsome St. Clair College Saints (Windsor, Ontario, Canada).

The Valorant Bears team fell to Salt Lake Community College (Salt Lake City, Utah) on Feb. 23.  The team earned two wins by forfeit over Garden City Community College (Garden City, Kan.) and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (Perkinston, Miss.) on March 2. The Valorant squad of Alex Defreece (Shaggy); Cooper Willis (ImBetterThanYou); Vy Nguyen (Mun#Azuki); Will Francis (bullfrogging); and Hagan Hunt (oKillMonger) play every Thursday night in the Basler Arena.

The returning Overwatch 2, Team A players Dylan Presnell (Arashi); Courtland McGuire (ColdCoin); Leo Phillips (Passion); Ashley Andrade (Scorpio); and Alex Defreece (Shaggy) remained undefeated with a 3-1 series win over Centralia College (Centralia, Wash.) on March 3. The win pushed the Overwatch team’s record to 3-0. The Overwatch Bears won 3-0 Jefferson Community College (Jefferson, N.Y.) on Feb. 17 and 3-0 over Harrisburg Community College (Harrisburn, Penn.) on Feb. 24.

The Bears Rocket League team notched their first win of the season on Feb. 27 defeating Bismark State College (Bismark, N.D.) by 3-0 in a best-of-five games series. Returning team veterans Hayley Field (Snow_flakess), Mason Ramsey (Tan_O_Cuna), and Ethan Fink (Radio) return to battle on the pitch. Joining the team this season are newcomers Bowen Bacon (bohqveen), Jaden Petrusak (Yeeeh_boyee), and Jacob Hutsell (BigHutsell). The team previously lost to Heartland Community College (Normal, Ill.) 3-0 on Feb. 13 and dropped a 3-0 match to Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College (Miami, Ok.) on Feb. 20.

The new Esports teams fared well as they started off the season against tough competition.  Mario Kart player Ashley Hughes (LuckyAshes) lost a tough match against an opponent from Union College (Barbourville, Ky.). She rebounded to win 4-1 against Southern State Community College (Hillsboro, Ohio) on Feb. 23.

Halo: Infinite team of Joshua Lindamood; Levi Dill (Jakapoo2); Daniel Fairbairns (Agent Clappers); and Manuel Cordero (Maneru X) earned their first win 2-0 over Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs, Iowa) on Feb. 28. The College’s first Halo gaming team lost the season opener to Southwestern Oregon Community College (Coos Way, Ore.) due to technical difficulties; and fell 2-0 to St. Clair College (Ontario, Canada) on Feb. 21.

Mamant Cham (Phase_No1) extended his winning streak to three games in NBA2K by defeating Pratt Community College (Pratt, Kan.) 2-0 in a best-of-three game series on March 3. Cham claimed two victories against Camp Community College (Franklin, Va.) on Feb.17 and Westchester Community College (Valhalla, N.Y.) by forfeit on Feb. 24.

Madden NFL 23 players Clay Wampler (ClayWampler) and J.T. Sipos (JT_Sipos) won the first Madden NFL 23 games on Feb. 14 for Northeast State esports. Wampler posted two wins the last being against Northeast Iowa Community College (Peosta, Iowa) by forfeit on Feb. 21. Sipos lost to Northwestern Michigan Community College (Traverse City, Mich.) on Feb. 21.

The Super Smash Brother Ultimate team of Kayden Haselton (Lunacy) and Silas Shook (GamerTheC) returned with new teammate Rueben Sluss (Draychoe). Through March 1, Haselton is 2-1, Shook is 3-0, and Sluss is 1-2. Teammates Shook and Haselton made the national SSBU playoffs last fall.
