My name is Matt Woodlee, and I have worked as an adjunct faculty member in the Psychology Department since 2000. I am a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a Master of Arts degree in Sociology and a Master of Education degree in Counseling. I am currently the Clinical Director at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion, Virginia. In addition, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Virginia. I have over thirty-four years of clinical and administrative experience working with individuals with mental illness and substance abuse disorder in inpatient and outpatient settings.
My teaching philosophy involves utilizing real-world examples of how the field of Psychology can be applicable no matter what your major may be. For example, if you plan to be employed in a field that interacts with others, then understanding human behavior would be an asset in whatever your chosen career would be. While the majority of my students do not plan to major in Psychology, I believe that many of the principles discussed in class can benefit them both personally and professionally, and when they “buy in” to that idea, I find that very rewarding.
My best experience from teaching at Northeast State involves when I meet former students who are now working in their chosen careers. I have had the opportunity to meet many former students in their chosen careers. I find it rewarding to know that their experiences at Northeast State laid the foundation for their current and future successes.
