Dual Enrollment Student Profile – Chloe Jenkins

Dual enrollment student Chloe Jenkins.

Northeast State and its High School Programs Department team salute our dual enrollment high school students graduating this spring. These students will graduate from high school while earning college credit hours through the career and technical education and university parallel pathways.

Chloe Jenkins is a senior at Sullivan East High School. She has been earning college credit hours through the university parallel program. Chloe shares her experiences as a dual enrollment student and her goal to become a physical therapist.

What got you interested you in pursuing the dual enrollment pathway?

I heard about the dual enrollment pathway at my high school and thought it would be a great way to gain college credits early. My parents encouraged me to pursue my associate degree, and I wanted to get an early start on my educational goals.

Why did you decide to pursue the career pathway you chose to pursue through dual enrollment?

I chose to pursue the pre-health career pathway because at the time I was interested in the field of physical therapy. Physical therapy is a great field for me to enter because it is a hands-on job where I get to interact and help people each day. This pathway will allow me to graduate with an associate degree and jump straight into my bachelor’s of Rehabilitative Health.

What have you most enjoyed learning as a dual enrollment student and why?

One of my favorite learning experiences during my time at Northeast State is when I took Public Speaking. Like a lot of other students, I was nervous about the course because of the dreaded speeches, but Ms. Church was a great professor who taught us how to give speeches. I looked forward to her class every day. I never knew there was so much that went into preparing not only your speech, but you attitude while presenting. I also enjoyed this course because of the interactions with my peers and the teamwork we got to demonstrate in our group speech.

What has been the most challenging college course you had as a dual enrolled student?

The most challenging course I have taken as a dual enrollment student would have to be my Organic Chemistry 1 class. While I had a great professor who happily taught and offered help, it was a new subject that I struggled to learn. With the help of my professor, peers, and determination to succeed in the class, I passed and moved on to Organic Chemistry 2.

Given your experience, what is the best advice would you give a fellow student thinking about entering the dual enrollment path in high school?

I would offer three main tips to students entering the dual enrollment program. One, stay organized. Keep track of your schedule and when assignments are due. Second, develop time management skills. This will help you in the long run as you figure out what schedule works for you and when to complete college work. And thirdly, build relationships. Your professors are here to help you, so get to know them and be involved on campus.

What are your plans after graduating from Northeast State?

I plan to transfer to ETSU to complete a bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitative Health then go on to earn a doctorate’s degree in Physical Therapy. I would love to stay in Tennessee to pursue a career in physical therapy after my education.

What are your favorite things to do as hobbies or interests?

I love to spend time with my family and friends. Exploring new places is also fun and exciting for me. I love to go cruising with my family, take day trips to new locations, and discover new local places to hang out. I also love to spend time outside hiking, camping, and enjoying time with my dogs. Lastly, I enjoy reading a good book while relaxing with a cup of coffee.
