Northeast State welcomes new PTK honor society members

Northeast State welcomed the spring 2023 class of members to the Alpha Iota Chi chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. The new members were inducted into the honor society for community college students at a ceremony held May 7 in Wayne G. Basler Library on the Blountville campus.

The ceremony was led by Tabetha Garman, the chapter’s faculty advisor and assistant professor of history at Northeast State. Northeast State President Dr. Jeff McCord served as keynote speaker at the ceremony.

To qualify for membership to Phi Theta Kappa, a student must be enrolled full-time in an associate degree program, have completed at least 12 hours of college-level coursework, and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. A college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter extends membership invitations to all students meeting these criteria.

The Alpha Iota Chi chapter consistently earns regional and national PTK convention accolades for chapter projects and individual officer service. Northeast State hosted the Tennessee Regional PTK Convention in March at the Blountville campus.  In the Tennessee Regional convention, the chapter won the 1st place award as the state’s Distinguished Chapter Officer Team. Chapter vice president of public relations, Brianna Puckett, won the 1st place award for Distinguished Chapter Officer category while chapter president, Ethan Thacker, received the 2nd place award.

Alpha Iota Chi also earned 1st place awards in the Honors-In-Action Award category and the Honors-In-Action Theme for “Nostalgia as Play” category and received the 2nd place award as the region’s Distinguished Chapter Award. At the 2023 PTK Catalyst Convention in Columbus Ohio, the chapter earned a top 50 Distinguished Chapter Officer Team award, and Brianna Puckett, Vice President of Communication, was recognized as a top 50 Chapter Officer.  The Chapter also earned a top 50 Honors in Action Project hallmark award and a top 50 Distinguished Chapter award.

Alpha Iota Chi holds five-star status, the highest level of participation in Phi Theta Kappa activities. PTK ranks as the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,300 chapters. Society chapters exist in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada, and Germany.
