Northeast State Community College has received a new grant totaling $920,000 through the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development to help adults further their education while bolstering their professional and economic opportunities for the future.
The grant enhances the program’s reach to assist adults and underserved populations of the region who are seeking to earn a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma. The grant also earmarks funds to support students in the state corrections system who are pursuing the HSE diploma.
Northeast State’s Adult Education program strives to provide educational services to adults over the age of 16 and lacking a high school diploma. The program provides adult education services to residents of Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington counties.
Northeast State administers the adult basic education program for the service area’s adult residents seeking the HSE. The HSE diploma is an alternative to a traditional high school diploma. Students earning this credential have demonstrated the same skills and knowledge as a traditional high school graduate. The program prepares students to take the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET).
Northeast State Adult Education offers free HSE preparation classes for individuals across the eight-county service area. The HiSET exam is also free for qualifying individuals. A HSE diploma is accepted by colleges and universities, as well as by employers.
Adults entering the program first undergo an assessment to determine their level of education. The program faculty provides instruction to improve their skills in math, science, social studies, reading, writing and employability. Earning the HSE diploma gives adult students the opportunity to apply to a college or university. The diploma also helps increase the opportunities for long-term economic stability for themselves and their families.
The grant also funds the program’s efforts to assist immigrants and other individuals who are English language learners to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension of English and mathematics skills.
There is no cost for adults enrolling in the Adult Education program of Northeast State. Adult education classes are available during the day, at night, on the weekend, and online depending on location. Students work at their own pace and take the HiSET when they feel prepared.
