The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) recently awarded Northeast State a $426,100 grant to assist with developing a Technologies Division capstone course to help industry partners solve real-world problems.
The funds will allow Northeast State to create the ELITE (Explorers of Leadership, Innovation, Technology, and Engineering) Academy, which will offer selected second-year students the opportunity to work on practical challenges faced by business and industry.
The students will collaborate to brainstorm solutions, create prototypes, test ideas, develop business plans, and present their proposals to a panel of industry professionals. This hands-on approach will enable them to gain practical experience while addressing actual issues.
The grant offers students mentoring and career advising, competitive and travel experiences, and opportunities to contribute to their communities. Also, the College will provide a workspace that allows students to work together on projects. The grant runs through July 31, 2024.
Community partners supporting the effort include Business Information Systems (BIS), East Tennessee State University, Founders Forge, the City of Kingsport, Sync Space, the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Eastman, State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Co., and Streamworks.
“The ELITE Academy experiences will prepare students to identify industry problems, develop innovative solutions, and market their ideas effectively,” said Dr. Donna Farrell, Dean of the Technologies Division. “We welcome the partnership with the region’s employers to ensure our students contribute meaningfully to the local economy and community.”
