Congratulations to the Northeast State Debate Team for their outstanding performance at the Tennessee Valley Invitational Tournament held in Knoxville during the weekend of Feb. 10-11.
The Northeast State Debate Team achieved remarkable success, winning 1st place in the novice sweepstakes category for their overall victories at the tournament. Rebekah Saulsbury and Alexander Benton won 1st place in the novice debate, while Dean Fagg and Matthew Hughes claimed 2nd place in the same category. Debaters Connor Sproule and Elisa Nanney also advanced to the semi-finals round.
For the individual speaker awards, Saulsbury clinched the 1st place award, followed by Sproule in 2nd place, Fagg in 3rd place, Riley Axelrod in 5th place, and Hughes in 6th place. Zaire Gary, Riley Axelrod’s teammate, also competed at the tournament although he had to depart early.
Coaches Emily Napier and Ruth Livingston express immense pride in the team’s accomplishments this year and eagerly anticipate the upcoming events of the semester. Next on the agenda, the four teams will compete at the State Tournament on Feb. 16, followed by the Buccaneer Bears Debate Tournament hosted jointly by Northeast State and East Tennessee State University at the Northeast State Blountville campus on March 23.
