Today, the Northeast State Community College Foundation announced 12 new scholarships, introduced one new program, and welcomed two new members to the President’s Trust.
The scholarships include both endowed and annual awards for deserving Northeast State students, and the gifts also provide funding for a campus food pantry.
“We are excited to welcome our new trust members and are deeply grateful for the new Foundation scholarships, which will provide ongoing support to Northeast State students,” said Megan Almaroad, Director of Development.
The new scholarships represent $65,000 in new funds.

The Foundation recognized two new members of the President’s Trust, honoring individuals who have contributed $10,000 or more to the Foundation. Dr. James C. Lefler, a former Northeast State administrator and faculty member, played a key role in expanding off-campus instruction sites, enabling distance education for evening classes and dual enrollment. Linda B. Lefler has been a successful realtor for over 25 years with Coldwell Banker Security Real Estate in Johnson City.

Also, the Foundation named Johnna Wood as the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Award winner. Wood, a 2018 Northeast State graduate in general studies, was recognized for her educational contributions and support of students in establishing the Kevin “Woody” Wood Scholarship for the Trades endowment.
Johnna and her late husband, Kevin “Woody” Wood worked in the industrial and construction industry. Both realized how skilled tradespeople can create an advanced quality of life in a community. This dedication inspired Johnna’s desire to create the scholarship in 2023.
