Pinning ceremonies recognize nursing graduates at colleges and universities. The pinning ceremony symbolizes the culmination of a student’s professional nursing education. The nursing school pin distinguishes the graduates from all other health care professionals and paraprofessionals.
The history of the nursing “pin” traces back 1,000 years to the Maltese Cross. The Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John the Baptist were the first to be pinned. Those pins recognized the knights as caregivers for sick and injured Crusaders. Named to honor iconic nurse Florence Nightingale, the pin marks a traditional pledge made by nurses dedicating their lives to their profession.
