Chad Smith and Chanley Vengchiem tied for the Outstanding Student Award for the traditional nursing pathway. In the licensed practical nurse to registered nurse pathway, Cara Hayton received the Outstanding Student Award.

The evening also recognized students James and Michelle Edwards for their extraordinary dedication to service others. Jones highlighted the Edwards family for their work as paramedics and graduating nursing students. It was agreed by the Nursing faculty that the couple exemplified selfless service through both their professional careers and academic journey. The Edwards family founded the Mattie J CPR Foundation in honor of their son, Mattie. The nonprofit organization devotes its mission to promoting CPR education, emergency preparedness, and lifesaving community awareness.

Pinning, or honor, ceremonies are traditionally held for nursing classes at colleges and universities across the country. The pinning ceremony symbolizes the culmination of a student’s professional nursing education. The nursing school pin distinguishes the graduates from all other health care professionals and paraprofessionals.

The nursing students graduating this spring will receive their diplomas on May 12 at the College’s spring commencement ceremony on the Blountville campus.
