Northeast State’s TRiO Student Support Services recognized the program’s scholars and graduates at its 10th annual Breakfast with the President awards ceremony on March 29 at Basler Library.
TRiO Director Virginia Reed and presented scholar certificates and awards of honors to the program’s students. More than 40 TRiO students will be graduating from Northeast State this spring. TRiO also welcomed back to program and Northeast State alumnae Robin Walsh, ’12, and Wendy Taylor, ’01, to share their experiences with TRiO.
“Our pasts bring us here,” said Taylor. “And when (students) are here, they put their futures in our hands.”
Lawson Hammock won Outstanding Student of the Year award for the Blountville campus. Robert Dunlop received the Outstanding Student Participant of the Year for the Northeast State at Kingsport campus. Zachary Keith earned the Outstanding Student Participant of the Year for the Northeast State at Elizabethton campus.
Samantha Parrish earned the TRiO Mentor of the Year award. Parrish is one of only eight students in the nation named as an Achieving the Dream 2019 DREAM Scholar. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and enrolled in the college’s Honors Program.
Andrew Osborne won the Outstanding Advanced Tutor of the Year. Osborne graduated from TRiO and Northeast State in 2016. He graduated ETSU in 2018 with a Bachelor’s in Geosciences and is pursuing his Master’s degree at Middle Tennessee State University. Megan Daniels received Peer Tutor of the Year for her work at the Blountville campus.

TRiO Student Support Services at Northeast State serves 180 enrolled students annually. In 2019, the program celebrates its 35th year serving Northeast State students. The TRiO staff of Reed, Donna Addington, Raylene Steward, Olivia Wyatt, Tonya Cassell, and Rita Lay coordinate a variety of support services for students.
TRiO services include assistance in transfer advising, tutoring, personal and financial counseling, career counseling, teaching study and time management skills, and assistance in applying for financial aid.
