In a strong showing, the Northeast State Community College Debate Team earned a second place team trophy and a second place speaker award at the college’s annual Spring Fling Tournament on March 30.
NeSCC fielded two teams: Emily Napier and Sydney Gounaris, and Spencer Russell and Levi Smith. Napier, Russell, and Smith had competed previously, while Gounaris debuted as a novice. Seth Bowman participated as a judge for Northeast State.
There were 12 teams and 23 competitors. Teams included East Tennessee State University (ETSU), Pellissippi State Community College, and Walters State Community College.
All teams competed in three preliminary rounds. In these rounds, NeSCC debaters faced teams from Walters State. Both teams went 2 and 1 in the first three rounds. Topics included Debating as a Lost Art, Online Privacy, Shuttering Instagram, and Big Pharma’s role in the Opioid Crisis. In the preliminary rounds, Russell and Smith earned first place speaker rankings.
Napier and Gounaris earned a place in the semi-final round, taking on ETSU, which sported a 3-0 record. In that debate, the topic was that Justice was Blind, and Napier and Gounaris emerged with the win.
Napier and Gournaris then faced a Walters State team in the finals. In that debate, the topic was about the environment and Walters State captured the win. Napier and Gounaris earned the second place team trophy, and Napier earned the second place speaker award for the tournament.
Next Saturday the team will participate in its final competition for the season when ETSU hosts its annual Parli Plunder Debate at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education.
