Northeast State celebrated the Class of 2019 on May 7 as the College awarded degrees and certificates to 1,422 graduates.
The 2019 class represents one of the largest graduating classes in the College’s history. The graduates garnered a total 1,770 associate degrees and certificates.
Northeast State awarded 22 academic certificates, 460 technical certificates, 471 associate of applied science degrees, 40 associate of arts degrees, 34 associate of science in teaching degrees, and 743 associate of science degrees.
A total of 199 students graduated cum laude, 98 received magna cum laude distinction, and 115 students graduated summa cum laude.
Dr. Bethany Flora, who assumed the presidency of Northeast State in January, presided over her first commencement, touting the college as a workforce development engine for the region and its myriad of employers. She told students they were a vital resource for the future of Northeast Tennessee.
“Students, this region needs your talent, this region wants your talent, and this region has high expectations of you,” Flora said.
David A. Golden, senior vice president, and chief legal and sustainability officer for Eastman, delivered the commencement address.
Golden has responsibility for Eastman’s Legal, Sustainability, Corporate HSES, and Global Public Affairs and Policy Departments. He also has overall responsibility for Eastman’s Ethics and Corporate Compliance program. A native of Albany, Ga., he holds a B.S. degree in accounting from Brigham Young University and a J.D. degree, also from BYU.
Golden urged students to be accountable for their own learning, positive in the face of challenges, and compassionate and empathetic to those with differing opinions and views.
“As you exit this great institution, with your newfound knowledge and wisdom, please contribute to good in the world,” Golden said “ Look in the mirror and take accountability for your lifelong learning and doing…buck up and be can do, and make time for thinking about others above yourself – acting with compassion – you’ll be an amazing power for good. And you will have virtually no room for regret.”
The ceremony was held at the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center on the campus of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.
