Northeast State Theatre students acquitted themselves well at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region IV held in Spartanburg, S.C., earlier this month.
Northeast State students participated in 17 total workshops during the competition. Theatre educators and professionals saw students from the region perform in numerous plays and scenes. Our students performed three scenes, three monologues and stage-managed two separate festival events. Northeast State competitors also presented four creative designs while making connections with students, educators, and professionals from all over the Southeast.
Northeast State Theatre continues the stellar work of students and faculty.
Student also participated in Next Steps, which provides students from two-year schools an opportunity to demonstrate their skills for theatre programs at four-year institutions. Representatives of 13 different 4-year schools saw the work of Northeast State students. All the students also got the opportunity to interview with the schools’ theatre representatives. This was an incredible opportunity for them to see their future educational options. Many of the schools came and told me how great they thought our students were.
Two of Northeast State competitors earned awards for their amazing designs. Shelby Ashley, a Northeast State alumna and current ETSU student, won an Honorable Mention notice in Lighting Design (the category presented a first-place winner and two honorable mentions). Current student Sarah Slagle received a new award called the Heart of the Arts Award given to a student who reflects the passion and drive involved in the creative process.
Northeast State students have won 18 top design awards in the KCACTF competition in recent years. These students compete in the same categories as students at four-year institutions and graduate level theatre programs.
The students represented themselves and Northeast State beautifully. I hope all of you are as proud of them as we are.
I also need to mention how Brad and I both had an important role at the festival. I served as a member of the Region IV Leadership Team as Co-Coordinator for the Next Steps and Brad was asked to serve as a respondent in the Design Storm event, something that was not asked of just anybody. We have both established and grown professional relationships over the years that help us serve our students and have taken advantage of the professional development opportunities available at the festival.
