Adapted for the stage by Eric Coble from Lois Lowry’s Newberry-Award-winning book, The Giver takes audiences into a futuristic world where a single person controls the memories for all the population.
Performances are scheduled April 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at 7:30 p.m. One matinee performance is scheduled for April 5th at 2:00 p.m. All performances will happen at the Regional Center for the Performing Arts (RCPA) Theatre on the Blountville campus next to Tri-Cities Airport. Young Jonas exists in a world operating under strict control and safety. There is no war or fear or pain. While war and disparity do not exist, neither do love nor longing. In this society, all people receive specific roles befitting their strengths and interests. In a ceremony assigning these roles to twelve-year-olds, Jonas draws the most important task of his society: to receive the memories of his community from the Giver.
The Giver is the only person who holds the memories of real pain and real joy. Jonas’ training helps him learn the truth about life – and the hypocrisy of his Utopian world. With his training, Jonas possesses more wisdom than almost anyone else in his community. He still needs the guidance of the Giver to help him keep all of his new experiences in perspective. Jonas learns the meaning of growing up, growing wise, and taking control of your own destiny.
Commissioned by the Oregon Children’s Theatre, the play quickly became a favorite around the world. The Giver played to sold-out audiences at numerous theatres since such The Coterie Theatre, People’s Light and Theatre Company, Dallas Children’s Theater, Nashville Children’s Theatre, Lexington Children’s Theatre, Florida Repertory Theatre, and Indiana Repertory Theatre among others. The play is being produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Ill.
Northeast State Theatre students and faculty have distinguished themselves as being among the top college theatre programs in the region. Students annually compete and win awards for their acting and technical skills at the Region IV Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
