Northeast State welcomed a new class of students this spring to its Alpha Iota Chi chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
While the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic forced postponement of the traditional swearing in ceremony, the students were inducted into the chapter this spring for outstanding academic achievement.

Alpha Iota Chi
To qualify for membership to Phi Theta Kappa, a student must be enrolled full-time in an associate degree program, have completed at least 12 hours of college-level coursework, and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. A community college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter extends membership invitations to all students meeting these criteria.
The chapter features a newly elected group of officers set to the take the reins for the 2020-21 academic year. The new officer team is comprised of: President, Brittany Rowell; Vice President of Leadership: Melanie Fischer; Vice President of Fellowship, Kai Howell; Vice President of Service, Samantha Maney; Vice President of Scholarship, Cheyenne Ward; Vice President of Communications, Briana Cox; Treasurer, Bryan Kirk; Secretary, Rebecca Jones; and Honors in Action Chair, Mackenzie Peters.
Alpha Iota Chi has long distinguished itself among the region’s top PTK chapters. The chapter maintains five-star status, the highest level of participation in PTK activities. The chapter posted impressive regional and national achievements this year.
Headquartered in Jackson, Miss., the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,250 chapters worldwide. More than 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with about 134,000 students inducted annually.
