NE State alumna Mary K. Engelman has been named a 2021 national award winner for volunteer service to the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Created in 2001, the award recognizes individuals who exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and have contributed significantly to ACS goals and objectives.

Engelman received her Chemical Technology degree from Northeast State in 1991 and retired from Eastman in 2019 with almost 28 years of service. She received NE State’s outstanding alumni award in 2011. Engelman also holds a bachelor of science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Liberty University.
In an interview with the Chemical & Engineering News, Engelman said “Volunteering provides me a sense of accomplishment. First, I love to give back to the next generation of professionals. Second, I get to develop skills that you cannot optimize in a classroom. We learn about communication, problem solving, leadership, etc. in a classroom.
“However, to optimize the skills, you must put these skills into practice. Volunteering provides a person with the opportunity to develop these types of skills. I enjoy working as a team member or as a leader on a team to problem solve or develop a new process. I volunteer because it feels right to me.”
According to Chemical & Engineering News, Engelman has served numerous roles within ACS, including as an ACS Career Consultant, chair of the ACS Northeast Tennessee Local Section, vice-chair of the ACS Committee on Nominations and Elections, and a councilor for the ACS Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division.
Engelman was named to the inaugural class of American Chemical Society fellows in 2009 for outstanding technical contributions to chemistry and ACS. She was the only ACS fellow in that first class that did not hold a Ph.D.
