Northeast State is proud to announce that multiple student-competitors brought home national titles from the 2023 SkillsUSA National Conference in Atlanta.
Alumna Mayce Wood competed in the national competition for the second year in a row, winning silver in Job Skill Demonstration.
The 2020 Dobyns-Bennett graduate said that her fourth-place win in 2022 motivated her to return to claim a medal.
“In addition to having a professor (Engineering Design Instructor Daniel Arnett) who encourages me to do better and go further, you really have to put in the time and extra effort to see success in these competitions,” Wood said. “You need to be dedicated and driven to succeed.”
That dedication and drive are evident in Wood, who landed a drafting position at Holston Glass before graduating from Northeast State in Spring 2023.
She is the first female drafter at the company since 1945.
“There were so many job opportunities shared through the program,” Wood said. “If you’re a student in this program, you’re basically guaranteed — if you put in the effort — to walk out with a job.”
Three other Northeast State students earned national titles at the competition, which drew in more than 6,000 students from across the country.

Justin Cornett — Computer Programming, 4th in the nation
Connor Ford — Technical Drafting, 4th in the nation

SkillsUSA competitions help promote professional development. Students compete in local, state, and national-level competitions to hone their skills and trades. Competitions involve various technical education trades such as electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, and medical assisting.
