Hello, I’m Sheri Kahn. I’ve been teaching since 1999 at the college level, and at Northeast State since 2004. I graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Master’s in History, a field I believe is very important to understanding who we are in the world. I have two daughters and one grandson. Gardening is my meditation and happy place, unless I am playing with my grandson and then my inner child comes out. Deep belly laughing is the best therapy.

My teaching philosophy is based on a no judgement zone. I deliberately try to make the classroom environment stress free. Brain science shows us that we learn better and retain information better when we are not stressed, and in-fact, feel positive about what we are doing; so I communicate with my online students twice a week, setting the tone with fun bitmojis or gifs. I also try to make sure communication is always there so my students know I have their back.
One of the BEST experiences at Northeast State was when I taught in the classroom, the ITV classroom. I am not sure if that still exists, but I would travel to all of the campuses on a weekly rotation so my students could see me in person and make connections. Most of the ITV students were non-traditional students; I found the in-person connections really helped me know them and they me. Nowadays, my experience has been such that even through Zoom, we can connect to our students and build relationships; I know I try to do that.
Since beginning at Northeast State Community College, I, too, have refocused my teaching and do online courses through TN eCampus, which is an online-only forum offering all types of classes to students all over the State of Tennessee and beyond. Northeast State’s own History Professor, David Toye, created the course I teach. No matter what I need, he is always there for me. Of course, I also believe my colleagues at NeSCC are WONDERFUL. I have never experienced an issue that someone did not come immediately to help, if I needed it.
In addition to teaching, I have been part of the wonderful programs within the advisement community. It’s been a pleasure and an honor to advise students that are non-traditional, coming back to school after being in the workforce, as well as freshmen just starting their collegiate life. To help someone reach their OWN goals through education is a privilege for which I’ll always be grateful.
My colleagues at Northeast State are always available to help with anything I may not be familiar with, as well as simple comradery. I have seen the campuses grow over the years, and I am impressed with the direction the College has taken over the years, offering the best education they can, with faculty and staff always available to help their students, as I try my best to help mine.
