Northeast State is pleased to announce that its Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) forged a new partnership with global manufacturer SKF Industries, allowing for the creation of new apprenticeship opportunities.
Northeast State student Jonathan Glover, who works as a machinist at SKF-owned Alemite Factory in Johnson City, signed an apprenticeship agreement that will take him to the next level at the company.
“You’re already there working and getting on-the-job hours,” Glover said. “It’s something that I know I can get a more comprehensive education through by getting exposed to different manufacturing processes in the shop.”
Glover originally obtained his history degree with the intention of teaching; however, he soon sparked an interest in hands-on fields. He began his journey in Northeast State’s Machine Tool program in 2021, and the class hours will go toward the hours needed in the four-year journeymen apprenticeship.
“Normally, students go into the apprenticeship and then begin working toward their hours, but I’ve already had a year at Northeast State,” Glover said. “It really helps because those hours go toward the hours I need for the apprenticeship.”
Glover will spend the last two years of the apprenticeship training at RCAM, where he will receive further guidance from instructors and gain additional hands-on experience — all while getting paid.
“We are very excited about our partnership with Northeast State/RCAM and Apprenticeship TN, and the opportunity it provides SKF to build a trained workforce prepared for the manufacturing challenges of the future,” said Nancy McGinty, Human Resources Manager at Alemite. “Department of Labor Apprenticeship Standards provide a strong foundation for the employee to develop their proficiency through a structured work process schedule combining related technical instruction, provided by RCAM, with on-the-job learning.
“As our first apprentice, Jonathan has shown great potential. We look forward to exploring additional apprenticeship opportunities in the near future.”
Dan Leathers, Manufacturing Engineering Manager at SKF, said that the apprenticeship he completed nearly 20 years ago allowed him to grow in his career, and he looks forward to seeing how Glover uses the apprenticeship to advance in his own career.

An apprentice in this program is provided an education, which gives them the knowledge necessary to develop their practical and technical understanding through their apprenticeship.
