Northeast State Community College invites the students, staff, and the public to commemorate Veterans Day on Thursday, November 9 with a ceremony honoring the sacrifices and return of the nation’s servicemen and women.
Sponsored by the college’s Veteran & Military Student Success Center, the ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Ballad Health Regional Center for the Performing Arts Theatre on the Blountville campus next to Tri-Cities Airport. The ceremony includes presentation of colors for all branches of the United States military.
The event’s keynote speaker will be United States Army Maj. General (Ret.) Jeffrey Holmes. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Penn.
According to the Tennessee Department of Military, Maj. Gen. Holmes received his commission from Officer Candidate School after beginning his military career as a tank crewman at Fort Knox, Ky. Holmes commanded armor and armored cavalry units at the company, battalion and brigade levels. He deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, first as the Commander of the 3rd Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment and second as the Regimental Commander. Maj. Gen. Holmes has earned numerous military honors, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Badge among many others.
The theme for Veterans Day 2023 is “Service.” Veterans are proud of their military service in defending our nation. Honor reflects the military value and tradition of answering the call to duty.
Veterans Day is observed on November 11 in commemoration of the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. Hostilities officially ended in 1918 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Formerly called “Armistice Day,” Veterans Day was originally intended to honor veterans of the First World War. The meaning of the holiday was expanded later to honor all U.S. military veterans who served in either wartime or peacetime.
The event is open to the public, and the community is encouraged to attend. For more information, contact veteransaffairs@northeaststate.edu or agroberts@NortheastState.edu.
