Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives the skills individuals need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Similarly with First Aid and CPR courses, MHFA helps participants learn how to assist someone experiencing a crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved.

One in five Americans has experienced a mental health challenge, but many are reluctant to seek help or don’t know where to turn for care. Unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges can be difficult to see. Friends and family members may find it hard to know when and how to provide help.

Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan to recognize warning signs of a mental health or substance use challenge, provide help in crisis and non-crisis situations and understand where to turn for additional assistance. The 5-step action plan called (ALGEE) is: Assess for risk of suicide or harm; listen nonjudgmentally; give reassurance and information; encourage appropriate professional help; and encourage self-help and other support strategies.

Since its introduction, more than three million people in the United States are trained by thousands of certified MHFA instructors, and that number is growing every day.

All registration and fees must be completed and paid prior to attending the course.  To register or for more information, contact Workforce Solutions at 423.354.5353 or email WorkforceSolutions@northeaststate.edu.
