Northeast News RCAM Workforce

RCAM & Co. running with classes, donations to local non-profits

Northeast State Community College wasted no time in making the RCAM and Company (RCAMCO) building a contributor to the community.

As the newest addition to the Kingsport campus, RCAMCO is located on West Main Street next to the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM). In an effort to begin immediate outreach, Northeast State at Kingsport contacted numerous local non-profit agencies to inquire if they could use the industrial grade shelving within the facility.

“When we acquired the building, we inherited a lot of high-quality industrial shelving,” said Barham. “We saw an opportunity to offer those assets to non-profit organizations in our area that were in need.”

The need was reflected by how many agencies took Northeast State up on the offer. Through late February, 10 non-profits from the region acquired the shelving including Second Harvest Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity among others. The shelving is made of industrial-grade steel that comes as highly desired for warehouse storage.

The building previously served as an emergency relief warehouse center for Ballad Health. Prior to that, the building was a distribution center for Giant supermarket chain. The City of Kingsport and city’s Economic Development Authority purchased the building in 2022. The College began leasing the building in 2023 with the option to purchase once renovations are completed.

The College also created an indoor and outdoor space in RCAMCO to begin forklift training classes for dual enrollment students as well as industry partners. Forklift operators learn how to onload and offload materials into shipping containers for transport. The College also acquired a semi-trailer to practice the forklift’s movement moving cargo loads onto a container.

The RCAMCO building will undergo continued renovations over the next several months. The building’s exterior is scheduled to be cleaned and painted later this spring.  The building’s interior will undergo renovations to create space to accommodate a variety of potential class and laboratory offerings.

Barham said the steps moving forward would bring the building closer toward serving Northeast State students and the community. She noted RCAMCO represented the first of many exciting updates coming to the Kingsport campus.

“We know the importance of partnerships to create success,” said Barham. “We are delighted to create more opportunities for our students and region with RCAMCO.”
