Congratulations to the writers and artists recognized for their work in the 34th edition of Echoes &Images.
Students submitted their writings and visual art in December to Echoes & Images, the student literary and visual art publication of Northeast State Community College. Winners were announced the week of March 10 for the publication’s 2023-24 competition.
Student submissions were made during the fall semester in the categories of Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, and Visual Arts. Judges with expertise in each category selected award winners.
In the Fiction category, Rebekah Saulsbury won the first-place award for the work Nature’s Justice. Brogen Heath Campbell took the second-place award for Watchtower O. Molly Faith Hein took third place with The Soviet World. Honorable mention notices went to Adam Wayne Miller for Take My Hand and Kayla Dube for A Useless Thing.
In the Non-fiction category, Sav won the first-place award for Taking Back My Power. Second place went to Jasmine Monroe for Carpe Diem. Tabitha Casey earned third place for Just a Number. Honorable mention recognitions went to Chloe Metz for A Thousand Cuts and Jessica Denzler for Last Christmas at Charlie’s.
For the Poetry category, Brittney Sneyd won the first-place award for Café Crowd. Shanna Holt earned the second-place award with Boxes. Jasmine Monroe took third place for Parking Lot Talks. Honorable mention notices went to these contributing poets Sneyd for Morning Walk and Edward Ozment for My Letter to Cupid.
The Poetry category received several quality entries. The following students were named finalists by judges: Brayden Greenlee for The Woods; Katelyn Boy for Peace; Brayden Greenlee for Grocery Store Run; Destinee Helton for The Ghost That Haunts Me; Chloe Metz for Shannon O’Leary; Keturah Yoerger for Delusion; Jasmine Monroe for The Fifth Stage of Grief; Hayley Miller for And She Survived; and Samantha Walters for Coffee Memoir.
In the Visual Art category, Katrina Stidham won the first-place award with Meow, a digital photograph using light and shadow. The second-place prize went to Emily Vain for Woman Holding Hamster, graphite on paper. Madison Adkins received third place with Chocolate Strawberry, a graphic and charcoal rendering on paper.
Honorable Mention recognition went to Garrett Griffith for Life in the Fast Lane, (digital photography) and Kesley Masters for Yearning (digital photography). Other art submissions noted for distinction by the judge were: Hannah Meade for Light Within the Storm (digital photography); Kate Casell for Re: The Past (digital media); Kendall Roney for The Cage of Opinion (graphite, charcoal, color pencil, and acrylic wash on paper); Makayla Leonard for Acceptance of Medusa (graphite on paper); Charles Root for Peachtree Street (charcoal on paper); Lydia Barrett for Safe & Secure (acrylic on canvas); and Shanna Holt for Self-Reflection (digital photography).
Northeast State’s Basler Library hosts a literary reading and art exhibition on April 11 at 5:30 p.m., in the Basler Library gallery. The event features authors reading from their work and a display of the visual art submitted for the contest. The event is open to all.
First-, second-, and third-place recipients in all categories will be published this spring in the new edition of Echoes & Images. Other winning entries will be published as space permits.
