Northeast State’s SkillsUSA chapter was established in 2018 by then instructor and current dean of the Technologies Division, Nichole Manz-Young. The chapter has recorded great success in state and national competitions over the past three years. Coordinator of Technologies, Ray Acker, noted this year’s competition marked the largest number of Northeast State students to compete at the SkillsUSA state conference.

Students are evaluated at the competition by three judges. Farmer posted a perfect score in the Job Skill Demo A category. That category requires students to create a professional project based on their academic major.

“I saw a lot of smiles and I saw a lot of leadership; that is what SkillsUSA is all about,” said Acker told the students. “You all have made connections that will last a lifetime.”

Founded in Tennessee and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education, SkillsUSA is a nonprofit partnership of students, instructors and industry that ensures America has the skilled workforce it needs to stay competitive. The association will serve more than 400,000 member students and instructors with the addition of the 13 community college chapters.
