Garrett Jones signs J.A. Street apprenticeship agreement

Northeast State Community College recently announced the addition of recent Tennessee High graduate Garrett Jones to the JA Street & Associates carpentry apprenticeship program.

The carpentry apprenticeship program requires apprentices to complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training over four years, alongside 605 hours of classroom training through the College’s Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) in Kingsport.

The program sponsors registered apprenticeships through the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and provides structured training to small—and mid-sized employers using DOL standards.

Jones’s journey with JA Street & Associates began at Tennessee High. Inspired by Career and Technical Education instructor Brad Goodman, Jones started working for the company during the summer of his sophomore year. This initial experience evolved into a work-based learning opportunity in his junior year, and by his senior year, he was engaged full-time.

“Working for Street for almost three years now has been a great experience,” Jones said. “I’m glad to keep going forward with the apprenticeship.”

Jones highlighted the value of the apprenticeship credential, noting its potential to open multiple career paths.

“If you go down the route I’m going, every door is wide open,” Jones said.

Jones plans to complete two years at Northeast State before transferring to East Tennessee State University (ETSU) for a degree in construction technology engineering. He aspires to become a superintendent or project manager.

Alan Clarke, a JA Street & Associates project manager, praised the apprenticeship program for attracting young talent like Jones.

“It’s difficult to attract younger people at the high school level. Hopefully, what we’re doing with this program is getting Garett and other students like him ready for the workforce and giving them a jumpstart on a career,” Clarke said.

Since 2021, Street has signed several apprentices through the carpentry pathway and the construction superintendent program.

Reflecting on Jones’ contributions, Clarke noted, “Garett worked with me on some of my projects while he was in high school. He did a great job. I’m excited for him to take this step forward  on his career path.”
