TEC Industrial collaboration doubles training capacity in NE State lab

Northeast State Community College has doubled its hands-on training capacity in its Motor Controls Lab by adding two new relay logic trainers, thanks to a partnership with Kingsport-based TEC Industrial Maintenance & Construction.

The new trainers enable instructors to create realistic error scenarios that prepare students for practical challenges and equip them with essential problem-solving skills for industrial control systems. The lab is housed at the College’s Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) in Kingsport.

“The trainers are critical to fundamental troubleshooting,” said RCAM Instructor Jerry Tate. “They allow students to see industrial process problems they’ll encounter on the job and learn how to correct them.”

The trainers are unique because they cannot be purchased off the shelf. TEC Industrial assembled them using parts purchased by both TEC and RCAM.

“It was a mutual effort,” said Blake Montgomery, Northeast State’s assistant vice president for Economic and Workforce Development. “The trainers have to be built from scratch. We had two, and now we have four, which doubles the instructional capability of one of our most popular labs.”

Montgomery noted that TEC Industrial has long supported the College’s mission, including donating start-up equipment to RCAM when it launched in 2009.

“TEC’s contribution underscores their continued commitment to education and workforce development,” Montgomery said. “We appreciate their support of industrial and manufacturing training.”
