Step Afrika! to perform at Northeast State Feb. 27

Northeast State Community College invites the community to experience Step Afrika! on Thursday, February 27, for a night of traditional African step dancing.

Step Afrika! logoThe performance begins at 7 p.m. in the Ballad Health Center for the Performing Arts, located on the Blountville campus at 2425 Highway 75, adjacent to Tri-Cities Airport. Before the performance, Step Afrika! will hold a dance workshop at 5:15 p.m. This workshop is registration-only, and advance sign-up is required. Both events are open to the public at no cost.

Northeast State’s Center for Leadership, Enrichment, Access, and Discovery (LEAD) is sponsoring the event.

Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional dance company dedicated to the tradition of stepping, an art form rooted in the percussive dance styles of historically African American fraternities and sororities. Step Afrika! has toured more than 60 countries and is recognized as one of the top 10 African American dance companies in the United States.

Step Afrika! performances blend percussive stepping, traditional African dances, and contemporary art forms. Each show incorporates songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation, creating a unique experience that highlights the skill and energy of this art form.

Step Afrika! also promotes stepping as an educational tool, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding. Their programs reach tens of thousands of Americans annually through a 50-city tour of colleges and theaters. The company also serves as Washington, D.C.’s Cultural Ambassador, sharing the tradition of stepping with audiences worldwide.
