Northeast State Community College’s Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) recently celebrated a new apprenticeship graduate from the Snap-on Tools facility in Elizabethton.
Jason Deaton received the U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship certificate on September 5 at the company’s Elizabethton facility. Deaton completed the mechatronics technician occupational pathway. He completed 4,000 hours of on-the-job training and coursework at RCAM to earn his apprenticeship certification.
“I liked the hands-on instruction of the program and the small classes,” said Deaton, of his apprenticeship experience. “I feel that the student-to-teacher ratio is really important for learning.”
Northeast State’s Christy Parks and Dawn Carter presented him with his official certificate of completion from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Office of Apprenticeship.
“I appreciate everyone here and the partnership we have; family has to be a partner with that as well,” said Parks, director of RCAM at Northeast State. “It is a lot to take on with work hours and training to reach this huge accomplishment.”
In 2018, Northeast State and Snap-on Tools collaborated to sign the first official apprenticeship contract between the college and the business. When joining the registered apprenticeship program, an associate is required to show advancement on the job and adhere to the terms of the signed apprenticeship agreement. Apprentices accumulate credit for on-the-job training and job-related education, which can be earned through college coursework or customized training provided by Northeast State.
The Elizabethton Snap-on manufacturing facility employs more than 400 people dedicated to producing hand tools sold throughout the world.
“All the dedication, all the hours with schoolwork, comes to this point where you receive the certificate saying you made it,” said Robin Pritchard, human resources director at the Snap-on Elizabethton facility. “It is a partnership between everyone, family included.”
