Echoes and Images contest winners announced

In the new Digital Art category, Hannah Pierce claimed first place with Marigold, a digital painting.

Congratulations to the writers and artists recognized for their work in the 36th edition of Echoes & Images.

Students submitted their writings and visual art in December to Echoes & Images, the student literary and visual art publication of Northeast State. Winners were announced the week of March 10 for the publication’s 2025-26 competition. Student submissions were made during the fall semester. Judges with expertise in each category selected award winners.

In the Fiction category, Layney Potter won the first-place award for the work The Ghost of Me. Hannah Morefield took the second-place award for Annabelle. Julia Brooks took third place with Are We Good? Honorable mention notice went to Jennifer Rasnake for Whispers at Elk River Falls.

In the Non-fiction category, Tanner McReynolds won the first-place award for Big Brother. Second place went to Wesley Huff for Breathe. Focus. Execute.  Sarah Webb claimed third place for Life After Awkward. An honorable mention recognition went to Amber Mullins for Bentley’s Journey.

For the Poetry category, Amelia Morton won the first-place award for Everything, Everyone, Everyday, Everywhere. Nathan Smith took the second-place award with Appalachian Backyard. Calvin Lee took third place for A House in Sulphur Springs. An honorable mention note went to Landon Camper for Gum Hill.

In the Visual Art category, Tara Stroub won the first-place award with Despite the Peas, I Still Am a Princess, a mixed media on canvas work. The second-place prize went to Ren Allen for Artist’s Studio, graphite ink on Bristol paper. Abigail Hollenbeck received third prize for Mice Shopping and Mice Baking, Diptych, a watercolor on matte board.  Visual Art finalists included Daniel Rutherford (Tungsten and Gold, collage on decorative paper), Oz Michael (Traveler, polymer clay, cotton, wire, fabric, and acrylic paint), and Riley Stewart (The Hug, plaster).

In the new Digital Art category, Hannah Pierce claimed first place with Marigold, a digital painting. Alexcia Coffey took second prize for Courage in Cleats, digital photography. Gable Napora took third place with Hotdog Vignette, a digital photograph. Coffey also earned an honorable mention nod for Appalachian Daughter, a digital photograph.

Northeast State’s Basler Library hosts a literary reading and art exhibition on April 9 at 5:30 p.m., in the Basler Library gallery. The event features authors reading from their work and a display of the visual art submitted for the contest. The event is open to all.

First-, second-, and third-place recipients in all categories will be published this spring in the new edition of Echoes & Images. Other winning entries will be published as space permits.
