The Kotchegna Dance Company (KDC) brings two events of music and dance to Northeast State Community College on February 6. Kotchegna features sublime African drumming and dance with colorful costumes, masks, and native rhythms and songs.
The KDC presents a dance workshop beginning at noon in the Auditorium of the Student Services Building at the Blountville campus, 2425 Highway 75. The evening performance begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Ballad Health Center for the Performing Arts also at the Blountville campus. Kotchegna choreographer Vado Diomande toured and choreographed as a principal dancer in the Ballet National de Côte d’Ivoire for many years. He established his own dance company, Kotchegna Dance Company, in 1989, relocating to New York City in 1994. His multi-ethnic dance company draws from the country’s over 60 different ethnic traditions from Ivorian village life.
Kotchegna dancers bring to life the traditional dance of the Ivory Coast also know as s Côte d’Ivoire and officially the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, on the southern coast of West Africa. West Africa. The company is comprised of a corps of dancers and drummers who bring the thrill of joyful drumming and the vibrant color of traditional village dances from over 60 different tribal disciplines. Dances celebrate important moments in the villagers’ lives, including births, deaths, rites of passage, festival days, and visitations. The villagers sing, clap, dance, and play instruments, each person taking a turn in the circle.
Their annual showcase, Kekene – The Gathering, features a dance-drama with guest Ivory Coast performers and the company in a spectacular evening of traditional dance and drum for all ages. Vado and KDC teach, perform, and tour throughout the US, offering dance and drum experiences to enthusiastic audiences everywhere.
